Reviews & Scores
A warm, wet spring with an episode of frost lowered potential yields, as did trouble at flowering. The growing season, however, was near-perfect, with sunny skies, mild temperatures, and just enough rain to keep the vines happy. The harvest began in the second week of September and delivered fruit with generous sugars but enough structure to age. The bottle tasted in May 2022 was extraordinarily fresh and youthful, with tropical and citrus fruit and an overlay of brioche and butter. A lively mousse, balanced acidity, and an impressive presence lead to a fine, subtle, lingering finish - a monumental vintage. (CC) - DC

I have had the good fortune to drink a few bottles of the 1990 Comtes de Champagne in the last couple of years, and the wine has always shown itself to be one of the freshest and most impressive examples of the vintage out there for current consumption. This most recent bottle at our vertical tasting in October was stellar, offering up a deep and complex bouquet of baked pears and apples, nutty overtones, a lovely base of chalky soil tones, brioche, a touch of leesiness, orange zest and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and absolutely at its apogee, with a rock solid core of fruit, still exceptional mousse, great focus and grip and a very, very long, vibrant and complex finish. A stellar 1990 Champagne! - JG

The 1990 Comtes de Champagne captures a stylistic middle ground between the 1988 and 1990. Slightly advancing tones of orange peel and roasted nuts are beautifully contrasted by a streak of minerality that gives the wine its freshness and verve. Bright floral and mineral notes reappear on the finish, adding focus. Rich in its texture yet effortless, the 1990 offers exceptional balance and tons of class. It should continue to drink well for another 15 years. (AG) - VM

This outstanding wine is made in a delicate yet frothy 100% Chardonnay style. Along with the Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes d'Or, this may be the sexiest and most voluptuously-seductive Champagne in the marketplace. - WA
