Explosive doesn't adequately describe just how powerful and vibrant the black fruit aromas are but as forward and intense as the nose is, the flavors are equally backward, brooding and completely reserved in personality. Thick, palate staining and remarkably dense with length that I could still taste an hour later. This is massive but not hard or one-dimensional and as remarkable as this is already, the potential for future improvement is uncanny - indisputably one of the greatest wines of the vintage and it wouldn't surprise me at all if one day my score proved to be conservative because it is so rare to find this level of extract. In short, this is genuinely awesome. - BH

This is much more like the Charmes than the Mazis with its seductive blackberry conserve nose and even more majestic build. Still quite severe too but one can't mistake its magnificence. Big, bold, upright. Like a very grand man who is not going to waste time being charming but simply presents himself as something to admire. Sleek, leathery. Yet more shades of St James's Street. - JR

Deep, saturated ruby. Cool, vibrant aromas of crystallized blueberry, blackberry, minerals, mocha and bitter chocolate. The suavest of these 2001s, with the powerful black fruit and licorice flavors showing a seamless fullness thanks to perfectly integrated acids. This extremely youthful wine boasts terrific verve and a lightness of touch. Dugat says it will round out further in barrel. Vinified entirely with whole clusters, with the pigeages done by foot. - VM
